In the Old Testament, Zion is a name both for the city of Jerusalem and poetically for the entire Holy Land. Zion specifically refers to one of the hills that Jerusalem is built on (see 2 Samuel 5:6–7). This hill is often called Mount Zion in the Old Testament. The place name Zion is often used in poetic parallelism with Jerusalem (see Isaiah 31:19). The name is also associated with the Jerusalem temple. Latter-day scripture has its own beautiful and specific understanding of the meaning of Zion, but it seems that this meaning was mostly unknown for much of Old Testament times.
