A renowned professor visiting from Rutgers University will give the keynote address at an upcoming two-day conference about the ancient patriarch Abraham held at Brigham Young University and co-sponsored by Scripture Central and three other organizations.
Gary Rendsburg is a Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies and History, and holds the Blanche and Irving Laurie Chair in Jewish History at Rutgers University. He holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Hebrew Studies, which he earned at New York University. He is the author of seven published books about the Bible and the narratives in it, with an eighth forthcoming.
Dr. Rendsburg’s presentations, one given remotely on May 3 and one in person on May 10, will both focus on two important aspects of the life and significance of Abraham. The first will advocate for a northern Mesopotamian origin for Abraham, which is a significant point for many reasons. The second will revolve around the subtle details in the book of Genesis relating to Abraham, the later city of Jerusalem, and the temple constructed by Solomon. Dr. Rendsburg will also participate in a panel discussion at the conclusion of the conference on May 10.
In addition to Rendsburg’s presentations, 15 other presentations on Abraham will be given by scholars at the conference, which will be held in person in the Tanner Building at BYU on May 3 and 10. More details about the conference, including a schedule and program, can be found in our recent blog post announcing the conference.
