Abstract

A lifetime of scholarship is reflected in Dr. David B. Magleby's presentation on the role of political parties in the organization of government. Compromise between the parties has been and will remain vital to sustaining the United States' two-hundred-year-long experiment with self-government.

Looking back at speeches of LDS Church leaders in early Utah, LaJean Purcell Carruth has recently transcribed several of George D. Watt's shorthand notes. Her work reveals that the published speeches were extensively revised from the originally spoken words.

Jeffrey R. Chadwick looks at the New Testament, the Mishnah, astronomical information, other historical sources, and modern scholarship to study the date of the death of Jesus Christ, and finds that Thursday, April 6, ad 30, the eve of Passover and the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan, is the most likely date. His research is presented with documentation and helpful tables.

Teachings of the Book of Mormon show that grace is part of a covenant that places requirements on the receiver. It parallels the meanings of mercy from the Old Testament and the concept that all gifts give rise to reciprocal obligations, which prevailed in the ancient world.
