What Was on the Brass Plates in the Book of Mormon?

Lehi makes a huge deal about getting the brass plates to the point where Nephi had to end Laban in order to get them. But we never get to find out what was on them that was so important. It’s tantalizing and frustrating, considering the brass plates had bonus material not found in our Bible today.
