I&rsquo;ll bet if you&rsquo;re a member of the church, you&rsquo;ve seen this image before of characters from the gold plates, and you&rsquo;ve been told it&rsquo;s the &ldquo;Anthon Transcript.&rdquo; Turns out it&rsquo;s not that at all. Instead, this is actually the Caractors Document.

Are These Real Characters from the Gold Plates?

I&rsquo;ll bet if you&rsquo;re a member of the church, you&rsquo;ve seen this image before of characters from the gold plates, and you&rsquo;ve been told it&rsquo;s the &ldquo;Anthon Transcript.&rdquo; Turns out it&rsquo;s not that at all.
For those unfamiliar, the Anthon Transcript is the slip of paper that Martin Harris took to Professor Charles Anthon in 1828 to authenticate some characters Joseph Smith had copied from the gold plates.
By a careful analysis of the historical sources and the handwriting, scholars believe this document was not written by Joseph Smith in 1828, but more likely by John Whitmer around 1831.
Does it contain legitimate characters from the gold plates? Likely. Joseph Smith made several transcriptions of gold plates characters that were then copied and distributed around.
But this is probably not what the actual Anthon Transcript looked like, since our earliest documents describe the characters being written out in columns, not rows, and featuring &ldquo;a rude delineation of a circle divided into various compartments, decked with various strange marks, and evidently copied after [a] Mexican Calender.&rdquo;
This original document hasn&rsquo;t survived and we&rsquo;ll probably never know exactly what it looked like or what it means. But Don Bradley has a few ideas in his book on the 116 pages.
