Latter-day Saints often talk about the spiritual experiences that they have to believe in the Book of Mormon and establish commitment to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many have found that, even after having these experiences, they can be reinterpreted to mean something else when someone who experiences challenges to their faith withdraws membership from the Church. David Whitmer experienced something similar. Despite being among the three witnesses that experienced seeing an angel declare the Book of Mormon to be divine, David was excommunicated from the Church and never returned to it. His story can serve as a cautionary tale to those wishing to maintain faith in the Church. Observing Whitmer's continued faithfulness to the Book of Mormon despite his excommunication, it can also serve as a bulwark against those who would dismiss the Three Witnesses' collective testimony as mere delusion.
