As Nephi closed his record, he emphatically taught what he called “the doctrine of Christ.” What some
readers may not realize is that Nephi likely drew upon the symbolisms and rituals of Israelite temple
worship to teach his message.

Professor Shon D. Hopkin suggests that Nephi’s presentation relied “upon imagery of the high priest’s
divine ascent” performed on the Day of Atonement. During this sacred ritual the high priest would pass each of the pieces of furniture going “from the east end of the Temple (at the altar of sacrifice) to its west end (in the holy of holies).”
