Moses 1 | Come Follow Me | Faith Insights

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:00:00.00] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Hello there. Can you think of a time in your recent past when you were given a task to do that seemed nearly impossible and you perhaps didn't even know where to begin? As we dive in to the story of Moses 1 today, I wanted to begin there because you can picture Moses, who spent the first 40 years of his life in Egypt, then he got kicked out, spent the next 40 years of his life out in Midian with Jethro and his family. Then Moses, while tending the flocks, saw a burning bush and went up and spoke with the Lord in that burning bush. God called him to go into Egypt and to get the children of Israel released from that Egyptian captivity, that bondage that had been 400 years in the making. You can imagine Moses feeling the enormity of that calling, thinking, I know what I'm supposed to do, but I don't know how I'm going to do it. And who am I to be called to do such an incredible work? I love this story because between the first burning bush experience and between that and his first encounter with Pharaoh, Joseph Smith receives this revelation that is now contained in Moses 1 of another experience where Moses gets to talk once again with God.

From that experience, we learn some really important lessons that instead of God focusing exclusively on the how and even the what of what needs to be accomplished by Moses, God spends significant time with His prophet, helping him understand questions surrounding who. Who are you, Moses? Who am I as God? And who is the opposition? So in this chapter, we're going to explore lots of beautiful principles surrounding identity, which allows Moses to then climb that steep mountain, if you will, symbolically, of discovering how to accomplish what God had asked him to do. So as we prepare to dive into these verses, let's think about this for a minute. As we analyze our own life and our decisions and the mountains that we have to climb and the missions we need to accomplish, sometimes it's easy to focus so much on what has to done. And then we look in the mirror and see the resources we have and the knowledge that we have, and we recognize how lacking those things are. It can be very discouraging, as I'm sure it was for Moses. So this chapter, to me, is a beautiful invitation to go back to the foundation, to the core, and be able to really get a better idea of those identities.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:03:27.13] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Who is God that called me to do these things? And who am I? And why would He have called me to do those? And when we get that firm foundation of the who, then the what, the how, and the why seem to be a little more doable. So let's dive in. So if we jump into chapter 1, verse 1 through 3, we get in two different places where God describes His own identity as He introduces Himself to Moses using two words, I AM. Those two words show up in multiple places throughout the scripture canon, and they're powerful, especially when they come from God as He's describing His own identity. That's important to Him that we understand who He is, especially then in relation to us. But He always starts with His own identity first. If you notice in verse one, Moses was caught into an exceedingly high mountain, this temple-like experience, if you will. Mountains in the Old Testament, this up, set apart, away from the noise and the hustle and bustle of the world to be able to more powerfully connect with God. Beautiful reminder to us to find ways to carve out time to spend with God in His house, in the holy temples.

And when that might not be as readily accessible or available, to find sacred spaces that we can make holy by being there. And by being focused on God and that relationship with Him. So Moses is speaking with God face to face. And verse 3, God spake unto Moses saying, Behold, I am. There's the first, you could mark this. I am the Lord God Almighty, and Endless is my name. So then God gives a second I am identity statement. For I am without beginning of days or end of years; and is not this endless? I love how He throws in here these reasoning questions and statements like, Is not this endless? To engage Moses or engage us as the readers into a conversation, a dialogue. And at that point, you're probably feeling really small if you're Moses, having been introduced face to face to a being who is Almighty and Endless, infinite in all these directions and dimensions. But then He says, Behold, thou art my son. So we have Him saying, I am, combined with Him saying, thou art. Once we have His identity, now He establishes our identity. And if we're children of God, children generally have the propensity to grow up to become like their parents.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:06:49.07] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And so everything that was just introduced in verse one, two, and three then becomes by default, our potential future identity. That all by itself creates this incredible foundation for moving forward to accomplish the mission, the what, and then muddling through at times the how, and even trying to wrap our head around the why. So He tells Moses, Look, and I will show thee the workmanship of mine hands, but not all. I can't show you everything, Moses. You can't understand it. And He makes that clear in verse 5, that, No man can behold all my works, except he behold all my glory. And you can't have that and afterwards remain in the flesh. And then in verse 6, He says, I have a work for thee, Moses, my son. Now, a very clear point here. God is all powerful. He's all knowing. God could do His work without Moses. He could come up with other ways to get the children of out of Egypt. But He has chosen to use His servant, Moses, to do that work. Just like whatever it is that you're facing in your life, without even putting forth hardly any effort at all, God could make your mission fulfilled.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:08:22.20] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
He could answer every question, every concern, every doubt. He could take away every disease and every setback that you are currently facing. But that would not accomplish His purposes. He has a plan for us. And in that plan, He lets us wrestle. He lets us struggle. He calls us to do work. And then He empowers us with what to do and strengthens us with reminders of our identity, of who we are compared to who He is, and that it is Him who has called us to this work. Verse seven, Behold this one thing I show unto thee, Moses, my son. So in verse four, verse 6, and verse seven, rapid succession, Moses hears three times, My son, my son, my son. Now, all of a sudden, all of the questions about what I'm supposed to accomplish and how I'm supposed to accomplish it, they become a little more contextualized. They're put into their proper place to say, wait a minute, I am a child of God, and God is Almighty and Endless, and without beginning of days or end of years, and He has called me to go through this work. Now we get the opportunity to exercise our faith in Him, our trust in Him, and say, I will go and do the things which the Lord has commanded, even if it's not clear, even if I feel inadequate, even if I have a thousand questions still remaining because God has helped put the who question to rest as the foundation connecting me with Him.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:10:11.02] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Now I can move forward with greater trust in Him. Which now leads us to the second part of this great vision. It starts in verse 12. It came to pass that when Moses had said these words, behold, Satan came tempting him, saying: Moses, son of man, worship me. You'll notice the false identity or a partial identity in this case, that the devil tries to convince Moses to focus on. A son of man. You were born of men. You have the capacity to grow up to become like a man. And here he is around 80 years old at the time with this great mission. It's stop focusing on your divine identity and focus on your mortal identity because that will bring with it all kinds of seeds of doubt for me to accomplish my life mission that was given to me by God. So this brings up a question, why would that infinite and eternal, all-loving and all-knowing God allow Satan to come and tempt Moses so powerfully and so profoundly? Why wouldn't He protect His prophet better from the forces of darkness and evil? It's a good question, and I don't have the ultimate answer to that question.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:11:39.23] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
But we see that pattern throughout scriptures. Even God's Only Begotten Son was not preserved from having to deal with and interact with the devil and his temptations. Before beginning Jesus's ministry, He overcame those three temptations given to Him by the devil. Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove has an amazing experience. But before that amazing experience with God, he was allowed to pass through an extremely difficult experience with the devil, as we see happening here shortly after his encounter with God. Now he is speaking with the devil, having that opportunity to get to know the devil's identity and the opposition so that when he goes forward to fulfill that life mission of his, he's not blindsided by the powers of darkness or by the forces of the devil that are always seeking to thwart us in moving forward and accomplishing those great works that God has appointed for us. Gratefully, if you read verse 12 through 22, you see Moses interacting with Satan in a way that comes from a foundation of faith rooted in Moses's true and eternal identity as a child of God. And so you see him try to cast out Satan three different times, and it doesn't work until the fourth time when he invokes the name of the Only Begotten.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:13:23.23] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And it's a powerful lesson for us to realize if we are going to move forward and overcome temptation, if we're going to accomplish our life mission, we aren't going to do it on our own power alone or based on our own individual identity. It's our identity in a covenant connection with Christ that fortifies us to the degree where we can overcome the devil, as happens in verse 21 and 22, and then move forward to accomplish that life mission, which now leads to the third part of this chapter, which is the astronomical, mind-expanding section where God comes back and shows Moses all kinds of things. He shows him the Earth and every particle of it, and he discerns it by the power of the Holy Ghost, and He shows him all of the inhabitants of the Earth. And then He shows him many lands, not all of the earths, but many lands. And there were inhabitants on the face of those earths as well. So Moses starts to get this idea of the grandeur of God's domain, of His creations, of His power and dominions. And seeing our own worlds in that big context is another layer of strength for Moses to now move forward and accomplish his work because he knows he has the Lord God of the universe, who also happens to be his Father on his side, who has commissioned him and called him to do this incredible work.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:15:12.21] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Now He shows him the way that He has created those worlds. Verse 32, By the word of my power have I created them, which is mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth. And then He tells him, Look, I'm not going to give you an account of those other worlds. I'm only going to give you an account of this world. But there's a beautiful principle here that of all of those other worlds that were created by God through the power of His Only Begotten Son who is full of grace and truth, you and I happen to be living on the same planet as Jesus Christ was born and raised and taught and healed and blessed and suffered through the infinite Atonement, was crucified and was resurrected and walked out of the grave, triumphant, overcoming death and hell for us. That happened on this planet, the same planet where Moses was living, where Enoch was living before him and where we now live. What a great reminder that God sent us here, not by accident, but He sent us here to accomplish real purposes, a real mission in our life. And He says very clearly, one of the most often quoted verses of all scripture anywhere, verse 39, For behold, this is my work and my glory.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:16:54.10] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Notice the personal pronouns there. It's His work, it's His glory to bring to the immortality and eternal life of man, and we would say of all humankind, of all of us. So as we come full circle back to your life mission, your quest for connecting with God in a covenant, regardless of what God has asked you to do or regardless of how you are supposed to accomplish that, or even the why, it's important to remember the who. Not just who are you, but who is God and who is the opposition that is seeking to overthrow us and not allow us to move forward in accomplishing our life mission. If we get that foundation firmly in place for Moses 1, and we see our place not just in this world in which we live, but in the world among worlds without number that God has created and recognize we're on His errand, and in His strength, and in His power, we can do all things. So the invitation is to dive into Moses 1 and then into Abraham 3 and look for these identity markers that help better understand God's identity as well as our own.

Because if we understand that, it doesn't matter what He's asked us to accomplish. If He's on our side, if we've been commissioned by Him and we get on our knees, and we offer our whole souls to Him, then He will help us accomplish His work, whether it's to go in and get the children of Israel out of Egypt, or to go on a mission, or to accomplish some educational pursuits, or to provide for a family, or to be able to continue to take care of a loved one with special needs, or to overcome any personal health or spiritual challenge that we are facing or to find that difficult and painful road back through repentance, to come back into a relationship with the God who gave us life. We have His power, and it is His work and His glory to help us walk that path because He will walk it with us. I love Him with all my heart, and I have to pinch myself sometimes to think of what an amazing privilege it is to live on this Earth at this time in these settings within the Church to be able to move forward and accomplish God's will. I know He lives. I know He loves us. And I leave that with you in the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Know that you're loved.
