Genesis 6-11; Moses 8 | Come Follow Me | Faith Insights

Hello there, and welcome to Faith Insights. Today, we're going to talk about the Flood. As we do that, we're going to focus on one thing, and it's entering into this safety of the Ark, or for us today, the covenant connection with Jesus Christ that He offers us, even as the world around us might be sinking into deeper and deeper levels of despair and sin and iniquity. In this story, we are going to see that this is not just about God pouring out justice and judgment on people, but to a much greater degree it's a story about God flooding the Earth with His love, with His grace, with longsuffering and patience and kindness in extending that charity and opportunities for these people to have faith and to repent and to come unto the safety that God has provided. So as you and I look at the world around us today, as you watch the news and you're aware of what's going on, some of these passages in Moses 8 are going to sound fairly reminiscent of what we're experiencing today. And it's amazing to now watch how God helps Noah and his family navigate these troubling times that he lives in so that now these scripture pages can become mirrors reflecting God's goodness and His mercy and His patience and His longsuffering with us as well.

So let's dive in. Moses 8:13 says, "And Noah and his sons hearkened unto the Lord, and gave heed, and they were called the sons of God." So if you're reading this through the lens of, so what? Who cares? This story happened over 4,000 years ago. What difference does it make to us today? There's a powerful principle in this verse 13. They hearkened unto the Lord and gave heed. They didn't just listen and hear what what God was saying, but they gave heed. They listened intently and they applied what God was telling them. And because of that, they are now called the sons of God. That is open to all of God's sons and daughters today to be able to have that same promise that we tune our ears heavenward and we listen to what the prophets are saying and we give heed. We trust that God is going to tell us what we need to know in order to navigate the world in which we now live. So what is going on in this world that they are navigating? Verse 16, "It came to pass that Noah prophesied, and taught the things of God, even as it was in the beginning."

So he's teaching the gospel that was given back to Adam and Eve and through Enoch. He's extending this to the people. "And the Lord said unto Noah: My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he shall know that all flesh shall die; yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years; and if men do not repent, I will send in the floods upon them." God is saying, I'm going to work with them for 120 years. And if they won't hearken, then I'm sending the flood in upon them. Now, I find this next part fascinating because God could have very easily accomplished what seems to be the target here, and He could have done it way easier than Noah. God Himself could have spoken from the heavens, called the people to repentance, told them what to do, what not to do, and shown them visions of what would happen if they didn't. He could have forced conformance to this behavior that He wanted them to accomplish. But He didn't. Instead, verse 19, "And the Lord ordained Noah after his own order, and commanded him that he should go forth and declare his Gospel unto the children of men, even as it was given unto Enoch."

Now, we know that Noah is going to be rejected, but God commanded him to go and preach to the people anyway. God seems more interested in honoring and respecting agency than He does in forcing conformance or obedience to his commandments. So He follows this same pattern, ordains a prophet, sends that prophet in to teach, a very unpopular job in this dispensation, especially with Noah. And let's just read about this mission call. You can imagine receiving this assignment. "After [the people] had heard [Noah], they came up before him, saying: Behold, we are the sons of God; have we not taken unto ourselves the daughters of men? And are we not eating and drinking, and marrying and giving in marriage? And our wives bear unto us children, and the same are mighty men, which are like unto men of old, men of great renown. And they hearkened not unto the words of Noah." They're giving all these reasons, this rationalization as to why they shouldn't be called to repentance. They're trying to justify why they've been the good guys. It's fascinating to watch the description in verse 22 now, "And God saw that the wickedness of men had become great in the earth; and every man," that's 100%, "every man was lifted up in the imagination of the thoughts of his heart, being only evil continually."

Those last four words are amazing, being only evil continually. Brothers and sisters, in the dispensation of the fullness of times, these days when we now live, gratefully, we are seeing the wheat and the tares growing simultaneously. Is there potentially more wickedness across the whole earth than ever before? It seems that the answer is yes. But at the same time, is there more righteousness? Are there more people who are spending more time reading more scriptures at deeper and broader levels than ever before in the history of the world as far as the number of millions of people doing this? I think the answer is yes. I think the wheat and the tares are growing simultaneously, but we can still learn incredible lessons from this experience that Noah and his family are facing back then. And that's an important note. God seems to do His work, whenever possible, through families, not just through individuals. Noah is not in isolation. He has his wife, he has his three sons and their wives, and they are working together on this. We get the negative view in verse 21 and 22, but now watch the positive come through. Verse 23, "And it came to pass that Noah continued his preaching unto the people, saying: Hearken, and give heed unto my words."

Did you catch those two verbs? Hearken and give heed. Well, you could mark back into verse 13, the same as 23, he's now inviting the people to do exactly what he had done with God. And what is their message? "Believe and repent of your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, even as our fathers, and ye shall receive the Holy Ghost, that ye may have all things made manifest; and if ye do not this, the floods will come in upon you." He's warning them of the pending danger and death if they don't obey. You're thinking there's got to be at least a little bit of response from these people. And the next word in verse 24 was, "Nevertheless." In spite of this good news, that's what the word gospel means, this glorious news, the glad tidings of great joy that come to us through Jesus Christ and entering into a covenant relationship with Him that is now being offered to them wholesale. God is flooding them with opportunities for increased agency, increased happiness, enduring joy. But "they hearkened not. And it repented Noah, and his heart was pained."

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:09:40.23] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
So here's Noah feeling bad, being rejected by the people. And the Lord's making it very clear, Noah, they aren't rejecting you. It's a reminiscence that comes later on with Samuel when he doesn't want to give the Israelites a king, and God has to remind him like He's reminding Noah here, it's not you that they've ultimately rejected. It's me. You're my servant. I sent you on this mission. I empowered you with this prophetic mantle, and they have rejected your message. And by so doing, they've rejected me. So what's the response? "The Lord said: I will destroy man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, both man and beast, and and the creeping things, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Noah that I have created them, and that I have made them; and he hath called upon me; for they have sought his life." They're no longer rejecting him. They're now trying to silence him. And we see this pattern throughout other examples in the Old Testament and in the Book of Mormon as well. So God is patient. He's longsuffering until people turn and seek to destroy His prophets.

Then the narrative shifts in all of these stories and scriptures, as it does here. Instead of seeing God saying, Noah, move away, go into a totally different land and isolate yourself and let these people keep doing what they're doing, that would not be kind, that wouldn't be charitable or filled with grace for a couple of reasons. For these people who you're getting this description of what they're struggling with, let's add to it, verse 28, "The earth was corrupt before God, and it was filled with violence. God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah: The end of all flesh is come before me, for the earth is filled with violence, behold, I destroy all flesh from off the earth." So there's this society that is so evil that it is now turned upon itself and is destroying itself. So He's going to prevent them from doing further violence and committing further sins and iniquities with this flood. So in your Pearl of Great Price, Moses 8:30, at the end of that, you could now write a little note in your scriptures, jump to Genesis 6:14, because that's where we pick up the story now in the biblical account.

This is where we get the description of the Ark. Now, brothers and sisters, this is a pivotal opportunity for us to not treat history as if it's just a historical, far away, non-relatable story, but rather to look at it and say, What can I learn from these people? And how can I see myself in this story? And what objects are there that are symbolically connected to me today that would help me navigate the wickedness and the evil and the bad and the thousand good things that I am flooded with today? How can I use this story and these events to help me become a better disciple of Jesus Christ, one that He can count on more than He ever has in the past. How can this story show me that God has faith in me first, so how can I now reflect that faith and have greater trust in Him? Let's dive in. Verse 14. The Lord commanded Noah this way, "Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch." There's an amazing little insight that will bless your faith in Christ.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:14:31.21] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
If you look at the significance of one of the words here, and the word is pitch. It comes from the Hebrew word kaphar, which is the same word that we use for atonement. It's this covering. It's this waterproofing element to make it so that it doesn't matter how much water is out there in the Flood, it can't get inside the Ark. Because of this kaphar, this covering, this atonement, if you will. I love it because now we see, wait a minute, this over 4,000-year-old story is alive and well today, that if I get inside of the Ark, that covenant connection with Christ, His infinite Atonement covers us, kaphar. It prevents the flood of destruction destruction and death from having any an effect on me. Then in verse 15, He gives you the dimensions that the Ark needs to be, big enough to handle all of the animals that need to be saved, and Noah and his family. And verse 16 says, "A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof." I want to share with you, if you haven't already seen this, a slight modification that was made in the Handbook of Instructions.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:16:05.17] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
It's in Section 38.8.40, and this is the first section in that under scriptures. And it talks about additions and translations of the Holy Bible and how the Church manages which translation is going to be the official version in each language. For us who speak English, the standard version for the Church is the King James Version, but it says, "Church-published editions of the Bible include footnotes, subject indexes, and other study aids." Now this part. "Generally, members should use a preferred or Church-published edition of the Bible in Church classes and meetings. This helps maintain clarity and discussions and consistent understanding of doctrine. Other Bible translations may also be used. Some individuals may benefit from translations that are doctrinally clear and also easier to understand. Examples of such translations can be found in the Church's Holy Bible List," and then they have a link for you to click on. "When members encounter doctrinal discrepancies between Bible translations, they should refer to the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and teachings of latter-day prophets." I love that clarity. It is so good to be able to see we start with the King James with its scripture helps.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:17:36.10] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
But then as we're doing studying and research, we can compare with other versions. When you click on that Holy Bible list, you can see what some of those other versions are, even with a list of setting up different reading levels and which one might be more appropriate for you to be able to understand. It's powerful to to make the word of God more accessible to more of His children. I see this is a major opportunity for us to accelerate the work of lifelong study and discipleship through scriptures. So with that foundation, if we go to biblehub.com, it will give you a side-by-side comparison, as you see on the screen here, for, as an example, Genesis 6:16. So as you scroll down through here, you can see a couple dozen or more of these different translations. Let's look at some of these first ones. The NIV, the New International Version says, "Make a roof for it," instead of the word window, it's a roof, "leaving below the roof and opening one cubit high all around." So it would let in air and light in that case. If you look at the New Living Translation, it goes one step further by saying, "Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat&mdash;lower, middle, and upper."

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:19:11.05] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
You're seeing that some of these are a little easier to understand. It's using more common language that we use in English today. You can see that there's not a consensus that all of the English translations are saying a window. Some of them are saying it's this space that's one cubit, the distance from the elbow to the tip of the finger, which is about 18 inches. So you can see how this comes out. Now, that's enough of the details. Let's see if we can make some sense of these details for us today. If you picture this Ark, inside there's safety. There's refuge from the storm and the rains and the floods. Outside, there's chaos. There's destruction and there's no hope. So if I were teaching a class, I would give them an opportunity to reflect on, How are your covenants with God similar to this Ark that Noah and his family entered into? What have your covenants protected you from? What are the floods in our world today that are seeking to destroy you and your family? And how have you found ways to stay in the covenant, in the Ark, with the Lord?

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:20:41.02] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And have people really wrestle with this for a moment to say, the temptations are strong to let go of covenants, to let go of connections with Christ, and to embrace the things of the world. It looks enticing on the surface, but there's no lasting joy. Wickedness really never was happiness, as we learn in Alma 41 in the Book of Mormon, and we see it here. So in conclusion, in these chapters from Moses 8 and Genesis 6 through 11, I hope that you don't walk away feeling like there's a vengeful, angry, judgmental God up in heaven, but rather that you see a God who is so kind and so longsuffering and who works with His children. In these chapters, we saw a God who mourns. We saw a God who is willing to reach out in covenant again and again and offer that to the people. We see a God who preserves. We see a God who restrained Himself until we could wait no further. And it was time to destroy the world with this flood. And now you bring it forward into our day. And I hope you're seeing that what we've got here is an object lesson for God's plan of salvation for all of His children, especially in the dispensation of the fullness of times, that this is a plan of redemption.

This is a plan of happiness. God doesn't want you to come into a covenant so that you can enjoy life. It's the opposite. He wants wants you to enjoy life and eternity to its fullness. So He invites us to come into these covenants with a willingness to forgive us, with a willingness to give us second chances and fresh starts. There's one door, there's one way, and that door has a name. And that's the name of Jesus Christ. He says, "I am the door, and I employ no servant there." Anyone who comes in, comes in through Him. Brothers and sisters, the Ark, the covering, the door, the light and the air that comes through the windows. It's all a beautiful symbol of Jesus Christ and His infinite Atonement and His mercy and His love that He extends to us. Once again, He had faith in us before He asked us to have faith in Him. May the Lord bless all of us as we seek to come unto Christ and enter into those covenants and allow Him to perfect us and protect us in the floods of our life today. And I leave that with you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Know that you're loved.
