Hello there, and welcome to Faith Insights. Today, let's talk about Easter. To begin, I want to start with a powerful set of three questions that King Benjamin asked his people. In Mosiah 5:13, he said, "For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far from the thoughts and the intents of his heart?" It's my hope, it's my prayer that for me and my family and for all of us, that this year during Holy Week, Jesus Christ will not be a stranger to us, that He will not be far from the thoughts and the intents of our hearts and that we will strive to serve Him. His whole life prepared Him for that great and last sacrifice, which was to be performed in Gethsemane through the trials on the cross and then to burst the bands of death in the tomb in the glorious Resurrection on Easter morning. All of the parables, all of the miracles, all of the sermons, all of the personal interactions: they are powerful foreshadows for what would come during that Easter week, that week of the atoning sacrifice. And by the same token, if you and I keep the Savior in the forefront of our mind and the focus of our lives, then everything we do can be geared towards walking with Him and trying to emulate Him and trying to apply His Christlike attributes and teachings in our own life and in our own interactions with other people.

So with that foundation, let's jump into a very quick overview with some ideas for how to make Holy Week just a little bit more holy in our life and in our family's lives. Due to the fact that this was an infinite Atonement and we all have finite capacities, it's impossible for us to comprehend or understand the breadth or the depth of what Jesus Christ went through and endured for us. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do our best to give Him everything that we have and everything that we are in the process of striving to become like Him. If I could sum up the infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ in the simplest phrase, it would be, "Not my will, but thine be done." His statement given in Gethsemane at the outset of the infinite agonies. And that concept can be a guiding principle for us in our lives today. We don't need to to wait for ten years down the road or for the next life to be able to say, Today I am going to more than I did yesterday, say, Heavenly Father, what would Thou have me do? Thy will be done, not my will. And we can strive to move forward on that covenant path as we walk with the Savior.

So we begin on Sunday with His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. There are so many things that could be said about each of the events on each of these days. So we're just going to give a very quick overview and pick out one or two things to concentrate on. For me, the triumphal entry is amazing. We often overlook one character in that part of the story, and it's the donkey on which Jesus is riding. It's a young donkey that's never been ridden on, and so he's unbroken. And they put Jesus on his back and then march him down a very steep hill amid gathering crowds who are shouting and waving palm branches and throwing clothing down on the path in front of him. And that donkey does not revolt at all of that pressure and those new things. I love the miracle of this donkey because on many levels, you and I are symbolically represented by that animal. As long as we give Jesus Christ the reins, we can go into the valley of the shadow of death.

We can be faced with all kinds of new and scary experiences, but the Lord, with the reins in His hand, can guide us, He can direct us, He can take us where we need to go, and I love that, if we let Him pilot us and be in charge of our direction. If we follow Mark's chronology, then the next day, Monday, He comes into Jerusalem, and on His way in, He curses the fig tree. And brothers and sisters, there are a lot of things in our lives that are like that fig tree. They're taking a lot of energy from the soil of our life. They're absorbing a lot of the light and shading other things that could be growing underneath. And yet all that fig tree was doing was producing wood and leaves, not what it was born to be. So there are times in our lives when we need to turn to the Lord and ask Him to help us remove from our life things that are like that fig tree. Then He goes into the temple and He cleanses that temple. Paul said, "What? Know ye not that ye are the temple of our God?"

Brothers and sisters, this event is much more than Jesus just going into a vast courtyard in the Temple Mount and driving out the many, many money changers and those who are selling animals at exorbitant rates. It's a miracle that He was able to do all that. One man stood up against all of those people and got them to leave and walk away from untold amounts of money and opportunities for wealth. He stood up to evil and evil backed down. And only then did people come into the temple who were halt, maimed, sick and afflicted. And He healed them. I love this. For our lives, you and I are the temple. We need to be cleansed. We need to be purged of sin and of wrong and of evil, whether it be desires or thoughts or actions. And there are so many money changers in our lives, inside of our souls, so to speak, that we can't cleanse ourselves. That's why we need a Savior. That's why we need Jesus Christ to enter into that covenant relationship with us. And we need to allow Him to come in to do that cleansing and afterwards to do that healing and that purifying.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:08:04.14] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Tuesday, He does a lot of teaching. He overcomes a lot of traps and tests and temptations that are given to Him by the Pharisees, the Sadducees, a lawyer, they're trying to trap Him and condemn Him. But He overcomes every one of them. Tells amazing parables, amazing stories and teachings there towards the end of His life. And again, we don't know the exact day where all of these events took place. So they might be off by one day or another, depending on whether we go with Matthew or Mark's timeline or John's. They don't give us an exact day stamp as we go. So we celebrate with Him through these days of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. We know that He spends a lot of time teaching about authority, teaching about giving to Caesar that which is Caesar's and rendering to God that which is God's, because we have God's image engraven on our countenance. We see Him condemning hypocrisy that He sees among certain of the Pharisees and the scribes and the Sanhedrin, leaders of the people at that time.

We see Him giving incredible prophecies concerning the destruction of Jerusalem and the Jews in 70 A.D. as well as the signs of the times, what would happen before His Second Coming in the latter days, from the Mount of Olives. We see Him giving parables to His disciples about how to prepare for the coming of the Lord. Then perhaps on Wednesday, there isn't as much recordage traditionally. Maybe there's this opportunity for you and for me to learn from Him, to take some quiet time to connect with God, to commune with heaven and to prepare ourselves better for whatever mission we have been given to accomplish. It's a beautiful pattern to see. Then Thursday, the Last Supper, where we go with Jesus and His Apostles into the upper room, and we watch Him wash their feet. One of these tasks given to a lowly servant. And from there we learn that He who is the greatest of all shall be the servant of all. And we can now look at people around us and think, if I really want to strive to emulate the example of Jesus Christ, then I should be looking for those around me that I could serve, not so that I can get something from them, but so that I can help them feel of God's love and feel a true sense of belonging in that relationship with me. Such a powerful example that plays out on that Thursday night.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:11:22.27] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And then we watch Him introduce the sacrament ordinance, that beautiful table fellowship that He offers not just to His eleven Apostles back in that day, but to all of His disciples down to this day, to invite us to partake of the emblems of His body and of His blood, lest we forget, lest we forget the price that was paid to redeem our souls from death and from hell, even from all of the effects of the Fall of Adam and Eve that we've inherited. Then we walk with Him and His Apostles up the Kidron Valley towards the garden called Gethsemane, where He offers His infinite intercessory prayer. And we learn powerful principles of how to pray and how to return and report to God on missions that He has given to us and how to plead for what we want most. And you'll notice throughout all of this, all these minutes and moments leading up to Gethsemane and the beginning of His infinite suffering, how upward and outward Jesus Christ's focus remains. What a powerful example for all of us to see that it doesn't matter how hard or difficult life is as long as we keep our focus on God and on loving our fellow beings.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:13:09.26] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
Then Jesus goes into Gethsemane and we learn what to do when we don't get exactly what we pray for or exactly what we want. Jesus's first request after He had fallen to the ground on His face was, "Abba, father, all things are possible unto thee. Remove this cup from me." And when the cup wasn't removed, when the pain didn't go away, but the agony continued, He says, "Nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt." There's the principle for you and me to be able to apply and strive to achieve in our own life, to be able to say, I will do whatever Thou would have me do. Then He is betrayed, He's arrested, He's falsely judged, He's condemned, He's taken Friday morning to Pilate and then to Herod and then back to Pilate. And He is scourged and He is mocked, and He is beaten, and He is taken to Golgotha, where He is crucified. Brothers and sisters, this part is beyond our comprehension. This part of the story is humbling on every level. Jesus Christ did not get what He deserved. He got what all of us deserve. He deserves all of the blessings that could possibly be bestowed for His perfect life. But instead, He took our place. He took our punishment so that one day He could give us that crown because Hhe was willing to take the cross, so that one day you and I could have a throne because He took our thorns.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:15:26.01] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
I love the way that Lehi talks about this to his son Jacob. This part of the infinite atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He says, "Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law." You and I who break the law, that law has to be answered. There has to be justice meted out. A punishment is affixed to that law, and Jesus Christ takes the full weight of that punishment. He answers the ends of the law. And then verse 80 says, "Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rest."

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:16:38.01] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
I love this concept of this great exchange. Jesus Christ takes our place in the flesh so that He could take upon Himself our sins, our iniquities, our pains, our sorrows, so that one day you and I, at a perfect judgment bar, might be found not guilty by the very being who paid the price for our guilt. The only reason we can be pronounced not guilty is because Christ already paid that ultimate price to justice and to the law. He answered the ends of the law, and now all He asks of us is to come unto Him. One of the beautiful ironies of this part of the week of the atoning sacrifice is the fact that when Jesus Christ is nailed to the cross, He's nailed with His arms outstretched, which makes his invitation, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light." And yet His yoke, His burdens that we laid on Him were heavy. And the eternal price of justice that He was paying was infinite agony and eternal punishment, overcoming death and hell.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:18:29.04] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
For on behalf of us, that great exchange, I feel so inadequate trying to understand such a deep and infinite level of love, love and sacrifice and complete consecration to God and to us. And then Jesus turns to us and asks us to simply trust Him, repent of our sins, to come unto Him in covenant through baptism and gift of the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end to walk with Him. This is such a beautiful week to contemplate all of these teachings of His gospel with a little more emphasis because of what Jesus Christ is enduring for us and what we're commemorating with Him as we walk through Holy Week, contemplating what it was that He was passing through on each day. And then comes out moment when He can finally say, on the cross, "It is finished." It's complete. He endured to the end. And in that process of being on the cross, He taught us so many lessons. He asked at one point, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:19:57.29] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And there's no response in scripture that is recorded. It's as if the forsaking continued until He could say, "It is finished." We see Him praying to God in behalf of the Roman soldiers. We see Him talking to the malefactors on either side of Him. We see Him referring to His mother and John and fulfilling His role as the eldest son in the family of Mary, making sure that she is taken care of. We see Him feeling completely cut off from God's presence and God's sustaining power. We see Him making a final request with two words, I thirst. And then we see the world responding to that request by offering Him vinegar mingled with gall. And then He says some of the most profound words ever. "It is finished." Three of the most glorious words ever. "It is finished." It's complete. And then, and only then, did He allow himself to give up the ghost. "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." And then He freely and willingly gave His life only after all that price was paid. Keep in mind, Jesus Christ is the only one who was ever born who has power over life and death. He gets to choose when He gives up the ghost.

And He could have given up that ghost back in Gethsemane when the infinite agonies first began. He could have given it up during any of the trials or the scourging or at the beginning part of His crucifixion experience, but He didn't. He lived all the way through all of those. He held on to life. And He invites you and me to hold on to life and to endure well the challenges, the trials, the difficulties that you and I face. It's easy to be good or to say, God, thy will be done, not mine when we're prosperous, when we're healthy, when we're happy, when everything's working out. Jesus Christ shows us that the true test of our discipleship comes in our darkest hours, when we feel completely cut off, when we feel forsaken and alone and filled with pain and anguish and agony. His perfect example was, I'm going to hold on to life until it is finished.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:22:52.16] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
And then we get His burial in the tomb. And Saturday is often a day during Holy Week where people wonder, okay, what do we do? He's just in the tomb all day. It's amazing to note the mirror from the days of creation here. God did His work in the first six days, and on the seventh day He rested. And the seventh day is Saturday in the New Testament, during the life of Jesus Christ. And so He's modeling what it means to rest on the Sabbath, when you rest from all of your labors and cares. And for you and me to be able to set aside one day a week and to rest from our mortal labors and work and cares of the world. What a powerful principle that He teaches us even in His death, keeping in mind that His body is resting, but His spirit is very active in the spirit world, teaching those people who for up to four thousand years have been waiting for the advent of Jesus into the realm of spirits, to be able to proclaim their victory over the death that has been a prison for them, that now they know the Son of God is in the spirit world, and He will then very shortly go and be resurrected and thus break the bands of death, not only for Himself, but especially for all of God's children.

<h5 dir="ltr">[00:24:40.25] - Tyler Griffin</h5>
What a glorious event that must have been for all those spirits in spirit paradise who had been waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ into that realm, knowing that once He's there, He would then very shortly be able to be resurrected. And consequently, they also would be resurrected. Which brings us to Sunday morning, the new beginning, a new creation, a new week, a new life, new hope, new everything. The greatest event in the history of the world, the Resurrection. And once again, we get three words. "He is risen." How I love the Lord. I want to add my testimony to the millions who've come before and the hundreds of millions who will come in the future and into the eternities. And that testimony is very simple. I know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. That He came to this earth to save us, not condemn us. And His promise is sure. He will walk with us. He will cleanse us. He will purify us. He will correct us. He will purge negative things out of our lives. He will triumph over death and hell for us in our life today and into the eternities. And I love Him with all my heart. And I leave that with you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Know that you're loved.
