In Genesis 17, the Lord appeared to Abraham and ratified or certified what we now know as the Abrahamic Covenant with both a new name and a token. Ancient covenant often involved verifying or memorializing the covenant with symbols or tokens. Abraham was changed to Abraham and Sarai was changed to Sarah. New names have deep, symbolic significance in the ancient world and even today.
However, in addition to receiving new names, Abraham and Sarah each received a sign or token of the covenant. Abraham’s token was circumcision, while Sarah’s token was the miraculous birth of Isaac. In both cases, the symbols of the Abrahamic covenant were connected to reproduction and posterity. Posterity and eternal increase are at the center of the new and everlasting covenant that God made with Abraham, and that God makes today with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in holy temples.
