Why wasn't Lehi's family able to use much fire on their wilderness journey?

Some readers have wondered, since it is fairly easy to light a fire using flint, why they could not use much fire until they reached the seashore, but the Lord’s commandment makes sense in light of the potential dangers from marauding bandits or other groups that Lehi’s family might need to avoid.
