The reference to barley in the Book of Mormon was once considered out of place since it was long assumed by many that none existed in the Americas until the arrival of the Europeans in the late Fifteenth Century. More recently, archaeologist have recovered samples of Pre-Columbian specimens domesticated barley showing that an American variety of this grain was known and cultivated for several thousand years.
