Did the Jaredites have Swine?

It is possible that the Jaredites may have brought Old World species of swine to the land of promise. If so, they would likely have become extinct as no evidence of their presence has been identified by archaeologists thus far. It seems more likely that the term swine was applied to species of American peccary of which two species are known in Mesoamerica. Although not true pigs, the peccary greatly resemble them and are frequently called pigs even today. They were a staple of food in Mesoamerica going back to Olmec times and some scholars believe they may have even been domesticated.
