Early Life and Family

Elder Brian John Holmes was born December 5, 1977, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Michael H. Holmes and Marian R. Holmes. He grew up in a large family as one of twelve children, where faith and Church participation were an important part of daily life. Family scripture study, prayer, and service helped shape his early testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.¹ 

As a young man, Holmes served a full-time mission in the Germany Munich Mission.² 

After returning from his mission, he married Alyson Margaret “Maggie” Wilson in the Salt Lake Temple on March 29, 1999. Together they began building a family and over time, they became the parents of six children.³ 

Holmes has often reflected on the importance of small acts of kindness within the Church. He and his wife have spoken about how the support and fellowship she received as a young woman attending church alone strengthened her testimony and influenced their family’s commitment to the gospel.⁴ 

Professional Life and Leadership

Holmes pursued higher education at Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and later completed a Juris Doctor degree. His education prepared him for a career in law, leadership, and business administration.

He later worked as vice president of Holmes Homes of Arizona from 2006 to 2010. In 2014 he founded Holmes Law, PLC, where he practiced law and advised organizations on legal and business matters. Later he served as general counsel for Charter One LLC, a company that supports charter school operations and educational initiatives across the United States.⁵ 

Church Service and Ministry

Throughout his adult life, Holmes served in numerous leadership callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His service included callings as bishop, high councilor, and stake president.⁶ 

He later served as an Area Seventy in the North America Southwest Area, where he worked with stake presidents and local leaders to strengthen congregations and support members across the region.

In April 2025, during the Saturday morning session of general conference, Holmes was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of the Church. With this calling, he began full-time service in the worldwide leadership of the Church.

As a General Authority Seventy, Elder Holmes now travels and ministers throughout the Church, strengthening leaders, teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, and helping members deepen their faith in the Savior.

Speaking to Church News, he testified that disciples who place their lives in the Lord’s hands can experience guidance and blessings beyond what they could achieve alone.

“As you turn your life over to the Lord, He can make more out of it than we can on our own.”⁷
