Abstract
This article is a letter by a non-member of the Church who was impressed by the Book of Mormon and after reading it understood more fully what Mormons believe.
A LETTER ON THE BOOK OF MORMON
This week the Church commemorates the 109th anniversary of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. Down through the years the Book of Mormon has attracted the reverent interest of many without the Church membership as well as those within. A letter recently received by President Joseph F. Merrill of the European Mission from a non-member in Queensland, Australia typifies this. Some excerpts read:
“Many thanks for your kind letter of March 4th. You would scarcely believe how intensely urgent I feel the necessity for the lively work of propaganda of the Book of Mormon in the world. The sophisticated world can do nothing with the Bible without the Book of Mormon, which you know is to run parallel, each completing the other and helping the other to gain of the world in understanding the righteous, spiritual law of God … I must say there are millions of people who know something vague of the Mormons, but nothing of the Book of Mormon. Generally what they fancy they know of the Mormons has nothing to do with Christianity. If believing the Book of Mormon makes one a Mormon, then I may count myself a Mormon, and I consider it perfect righteousness that Mormon, in view of his work, should have his name recognized in this age … In this great day of advertisement, would it not be well to advertise the Book of Mormon ? …
