Abstract

The entire book of Deuteronomy appears to follow the structure of a covenant ceremony, perhaps written for the passing of the mantle of leadership from Moses to Joshua. The book of Mosiah in the Book of Mormon resembles this process. The elements of covenant making follow a suggested outline: an introduction of the covenant parties, a review of history, individual commandments, blessings and cursings, witness and oaths of acceptance, and the reading of the covenant and the deposit of the text.
