Abstract

This article briefly explores how early Latter-day Saints approached the question of what constitutes valid baptism and then documents and analyzes the three modes of rebaptism in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: (1) as a function of church discipline, (2) voluntarily for the remission of sins, and (3) for the renewal of covenants. Evident from this analysis is that rebaptism was prominent within the development of Latter-day Saint covenant theology and its resulting distinctions from other Christian traditions.
