Abstract

Jacob's sermon in 2 Nephi 6-10 is generally understood by modern Latter-day Saints from the perspective of the life, teachings, and atonement of Jesus. However, Jacob's sermon is just as much grounded in the ancient Israelite rituals of the Day of Atonement. A comparison of Jacob's sermon with Day of Atonement ideology demonstrates that Jacob probably gave his sermon at the temple on the Day of Atonement, with its rituals and beliefs forming an assumed background to his teachings.
