Abstract
To embark is to call upon faith despite apprehension, anxiety and doubt. It’s often times necessary to lean on the faith of others during the first few steps of the journey, until personal testimony becomes strong enough to quell fear. Lehi’s family relied on his strength while they gained their own witness of the necessity of their journey.
Lighting in this image is symbolic. Though they walk from light into shadow, they are still walking toward the rising sun. Lehi’s face is the most determined, because at this point in the journey, he is the family’s strength. The apprehension, complaints, and anxieties of other family members can be felt in their bodily attitudes. Some look back toward the distant city of Jerusalem. A few look to Lehi for strength and guidance.
