Abstract

In Doctrine and Covenants 124, the Prophet Joseph Smith was commanded by the Lord to pen a "solemn proclamation" to all the leaders and nations of the world. As mentioned in the revelation, Robert B. Thompson was to help produce this proclamation. Unfortunately, Thompson only completed a draft before his death on August 27, 1841.

Two years later, on November 21, 1843, the prophet instructed Willard Richards, Orson Hyde, John Taylor, and William W. Phelps to write this proclamation. Unfortunately, their work was intermittent because of Joseph Smith's presidential campaign and his assassination.

The proclamation was finally published in April 1845. It was primarily written by Elder Parley P. Pratt, but formally acknowledged as a Proclamation of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter-day Saints."

It was addressed: "To all the kings of the world, to the president of the United States of America; to the governors of the several states and to the rulers and people of all nations." It recites the beliefs, hopes, and practices of the Church; the events that transpired in the restoration of the gospel; the preparations that are to be made for the coming of the Savior; the persecution suffered by the people and the martyrdom of their Prophet and their Patriarch.
