Suffering and Triumph of the Messiah (53:1–12)
Christ’s disciples | 53 1Who has believed our report? |
Isaiah | 2For He will grow up before Him as a tender plant |
Non-believers | He has no form or majesty that we should look at Him |
Isaiah | 3He is despised a man of pains and like one from whom people hid their faces. |
Non-believers | But we esteemed Him not. |
Christ’s disciples | 4Surely He has borne our sicknesses |
Non-believers | But we esteemed Him stricken, |
Christ’s disciples | 5But He was pierced for our transgressions; The chastening upon Him made us whole, |
Non-believers | 6All we like sheep have gone astray; |
Christ’s disciples | And the LORD has laid on Him the [iniquities][1] of us all. |
Isaiah | 7He was oppressed, but He opened not His mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, 8He was taken from oppression and from judgment. And who will consider His generation? Because He was cut off out of the land of the living; 9And He made His grave with the wicked though He had done no [evil][3], 10And the LORD desired to crush Him; 11He will see the trouble of His soul, and He will be satisfied; |
God | 12Therefore I will divide for Him a portion with the great, because He has laid His soul bare to death, and He bore the [sins][5] of many |
